Ugadi roughly translates to , Uga – era and Adi – new. The start of a new era.

Today we celebrated the Telugu New Year :) . Telugu people follow the lunisolar calender, so it gets kind of tough to keep track of such days :P

UGADI

Ugadi is one of the few days people still wear traditional clothes girls wearing langa voni’s and guys wearing panchs or kurtas. The thing I like about Ugadi the most it super delicious food you only get in an Andhra household. Delicious Lemon rice, Yogurt dipped Wada’s, Sweet Kheer.

Rice KheerDahi Wada

It is also the only day Ugadi Pachadi (umm.. new year pickle) is served. Me thinks , I cant explain it better than wikipedia ;)

The eating of a specific mixture of ;

This mixture with all six tastes (షడ్రుచులు), called “Ugadi Pachhadi” (ఉగాది పచ్చడి) in Telugu and “Bevu-Bella”( ಬೇವು-ಬೆಲ್ಲ ) in Kannada[1], symbolizes the fact that life is a mixture of different experiences (sadness, happiness, anger, fear, disgust, surprise) , which should be accepted together and with equanimity.

Wonderful. Thanks for putting up this post 6mile! I am always interested in other cultures! The lemon rice looks delicious! But the other stuff, I don’t know the name for each thing in the picture. The white stuff with the leaf? in it looks like tapioca pudding to me hehe :)

2. Mirchi - April 13, 2008

Happy Ugadi!!

Did you prepare any of the yummy dishes?

Ive always liked the symbolism of the six flavours in that pachadi.
Im also fond of proverbs, lol.
“Eat sweet, Talk sweet”
“In every home the dosai has holes”

I just realized I havent gone back and read all your older posts. Im sure its too late to comment on those by now.

3. 6mile - April 13, 2008

Thanks !! I did not :P , I’m a very experimental cook, such dishes demand perfection, hehe. I started learning cooking only after coming to the US. I used to help my mom by cutting veggies, so the transition has been smooth.

I got to eat a lot of yummy dishes though 27 in total, most of them you never get to eat outside.

Its never to late to comment, one of my oldest post 409 days in the US, has been very active lately. I’m looking forward to reading posts written by you .

Ara,the white stuff with the spoon is rice kheer ( thickned sweetened rice in milk) and the one next to it dahi vada ( spiced up curd with lentil like sponge donuts )

The white ones are sabudana papad ( papad are brittle round tostito with pepper and other flavors made out of flour)

http://outofthegarden.wordpress.com/2007/03/11/good-things-come-to-those-who-wait-indiras-amma-mudda/

Amma Mudda means, mothers balls , when we are little kids mom makes us tiny rice balls and feeds them by hand, packed with a punch of flavor and love. Every time you ever eat a simmilar dish, you just remember them no mater where they are.

In the first picture the fried looking items (the bottom two on the tray) look very yummy. The Dahi Wada looks good too!

5. Mirchi - April 13, 2008

Ara, if you mean the white stuff in the top right corner of the plate, it IS made of tapioca! But its not pudding nor sweet. The tapioca pearls are soaked, dried into wafers, then fried, like 6mile said. Tapioca is called sabudana or sago, or javarasi, and probably other names too :p

6mile, glad you got to feast! 27 items. Nobody invited me. boo hoo.

The fried thing at the bottom of the plate I guess is vada or garelu. But the thing beside it, I dont think its fried. Looks carrotish. Is it halwa?? Is it carrot-peanut salad thingi?

6. 6mile - April 13, 2008

wmwb, Dahi Vada is like spiced up donut in a sour cream kind of sauce, very hard to explain :P , but if made right it just melts in your mouth

mirchi,I thought that was a pickle ? :P

7. Mirchi - April 13, 2008

That would be ALOT of pickle!! Might have some “problems” later on with all that! lol

8. ara0062 - April 14, 2008

Doh LOL!

9. 6mile - April 14, 2008

12. 6mile - April 14, 2008

13. ara0062 - April 15, 2008

As for tapioca…I imagine it tastes nice fried..as for tapioca pudding..I am NOT a fan of it.

14. whiteymcwheatbread - April 15, 2008

ok 6mile I changed my layout to this one.

15. whiteymcwheatbread - April 16, 2008

I like this layout. It is nice! I love that you used a picture of the sky and used The journey of a maverick. Since you are on a journey and the moon is a journey and Top Gun is like your favorite movie and Maverick is from that. A lot of layers and thoughts!

16. 6mile - April 16, 2008

My old theme was a rainy sunday afternoon on a a street with a bright red umbrella, I just love rain soo much. I love the tender droplets of water fall on my head. Drench me from head to toe. Feel the wind go through my hair. The smell of the soil and muddy potholes.:)

17. ara0062 - April 16, 2008

And don’t forget just the SMELL of rain..ahh so wonderfully enticing… LOL Top Gun is a really good movie.. it has my all time favorite song in it..oh doh, I think I mentioned that somewhere a ways back..on another site hehe

18. whiteymcwheatbread - April 16, 2008

Let me think yours was goodness gracious great balls of fire Nk’s is probably Highway to the Danger Zone or playing with the Boys ;) 6miles has got to be You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling and mine hmmm Sitting on the Dock of the Bay LMAO ROFL ;)

19. NeoKalypso - April 16, 2008

Btw I love your description of you as a maverick. It’s so right on!! Ohh la la.. a 6mile MAVERICK! I like it.

20. NeoKalypso - April 16, 2008

AHHAAH that’s pretty good WmWb, but I kind of like 6mile’s more: I’d like to think I have my own pair of great balls of fire. TMI. Anyway, I just added you to my blogroll! And, I didn’t know you were a nanny?! Would you ever consider doing a review of Supernanny the show? I LOVE that show…

Anyway, I’m SOOOO doing a review of the sex and the city movie when it comes out!

Sorry for hyjaking your blog 6mile!

21. NeoKalypso - April 16, 2008

Joseph Campbell, my hero, called himself a maverick once too!!!

22. ara0062 - April 17, 2008

nope, it’s Take My Breath Away LOL.

23. Mirchi - April 17, 2008

Well, maverick, where have you been? Are you taking exams this week?
We miss you!

24. whiteymcwheatbread - April 17, 2008

Ara-I knew it was Take My Breath Away (that is why I left it off the list).

NK- No I do not do T.V. Shows lol and I HATE the nanny shows. I think I do not like them because there are so many ways of looking at situations and one person cannot always be a fixer I just think UGH well I think a lot of crap haha.and I HATED Sex and the City show so if you would like to guest write (contribute) to the movie site you can review that for us!

Mirchi-We will figure out how to lump you in with us once you comment a few more times so we can get a feel of your personality ;)

25. Mirchi - April 17, 2008

OOOh I am on probation!! lol

I knew ara would like take my breath away too! Guess Im getting to know you guys.

I loved sx and the city… I never thought I would, but I did.

26. NeoKalypso - April 17, 2008

I mean, there ARE a lot of flaws with sex and the city, but I feel it did create many more options for women than we had before.

I bet 6mile loves all us girls talking about sex and the city here! AHHAAHHA!!!

27. NeoKalypso - April 17, 2008

Yes, Maverick come back!

28. ara0062 - April 17, 2008

ahhaha. I never was much into the Sex and the City show. Honestly, it kind of bored me, and I thought in some ways, it portrayed us women in a bad stereotype light.. that we’re always on the prowl for any man just to satisfy our needs. But I know some of them were just in search of the perfect mate too… Doh, I’m probably going to get yelled at for that comment LOL.

29. Mirchi - April 17, 2008

LOL, I know, how did a thread on Ugadi turn into sx and the city!

No ara, I dont think anyone will yell at you ;)
I thought it would be all about fooling around and ultra modern women stuff but I actually think it made some profound observations about relationships in general, and from many different aspects. Kinda makes you take a closer look at yourself, women, and society in general. Or maybe I was thinking too deeply! haha. I liked the inner dialogue too.

30. Mirchi - April 17, 2008

I just realized how horribly written that was. I guess I should take more time and read over what I write!

Im just a posting maniac today, haha.

31. whiteymcwheatbread - April 17, 2008

6mile is gonna come back and he is going to be like wth lol. yea we all have our posting maniac days!

32. 6mile - April 18, 2008

Hey ! I’m back ! I had like 3 exams today ! :( ,

hehe, I’m an unbanded calf , what can I say. I’ve never seen a single episode of sx and the cty ;) ,seen a MadTV spoof of it though ;)
I was away just one day and sooooo much to catch up on , hehe.

33. ara0062 - April 18, 2008

Hehehe, how funny. I hope your exams went well 6mile. I will never understand why professors have to do throw them all on one day like that.. grr… unbanded calf? &)
